Sydney City Hotels Filling Fast For Australian Garden Show
Garden lovers from around Australia and overseas are expected to flock to Sydney in September when the city hosts the inaugural Australian Garden Show in Centennial Park from September 5-8, 2013.
A NSW Government event, The Australian Garden Show will be held in the Brazilan Fields West in Centennial Park, and is expected to quickly gain national and international credibility, attracting garden lovers from around the world.
Accommodation in the city is expected to be at a premium for the spring event, so garden enthusiasts are advised to book now to avoid disappointment. Metro Hotel Sydney Central and Metro Hotel on Pitt are two properties located within walking distance of Centennial Park, with both hotels offering a range of affordable packages.
Metro Hotel Sydney Central is the Metro Hospitality Group’s flagship property on the corner of Pitt and Hay Streets in the heart of Sydney. The hotel recently completed a two year refurbishment that saw a complete upgrade of its rooms and facilities, and its location opposite the Capitol Theatre in the Entertainment Precinct makes it the perfect choice for garden enthusiasts wanting to be close to the Park so they can make the most of the day.
Also located on Pitt Street, Metro Hotel on Pitt is a stylish boutique hotel closer to the city centre and better suited for guests wanting to mix a visit to the Garden Show with some shopping and sightseeing in the heart of the city. A short bus trip will take you to the show.
The event has been designed as the ultimate garden showcase and will appeal not only to experienced gardeners, landscapers and designers but also novices and the many people who just like to admire the handiwork of other people’s green thumbs and creativity.
The Australian Garden Show Sydney will combine display gardens designed by leading landscape architects, workshops presented by gardening gurus and personalities, a potting tent for children, products to purchase and a high tea marquee which, come nightfall, transforms into a floral cocktail bar setting – complemented by the now established Centennial Park Light Garden.
The Australia Garden Show Sydney also coincides with Centennial Park’s 125th Anniversary, providing another reason to visit the show in its first year.
Metro Hotel Sydney Central and Metro Hotel on Pitt are located less than five kilometres from Centennial Parklands, and can be reached by bus, train or on foot.
Book accommodation at Metro Hotel properties by calling the toll free Central Reservations line on 1800 004 321. Alternatively bookings can be made online at www.metrohotels.com.au

Australia’s Wonderland Set for Return
News.com.au and several other sites came out last Friday with reports that Australia’s Wonderland was set to return to Sydney’s west, courtesy of Mount Druitt property developer Ammar Khan. Only, it would have a different name: Sydney’s Wonderland. The only question we have about this resurrection of the theme park that was closed in 2004 is this: will the Bush Beastie make a rattling and triumphant return?
According to the report Mr Khan said the project would take three years to complete stage one, which would include hotel operations, cinemas and restaurants, as well as a multi-themed attractions and amusements.‘The timing on when this $150 million project starts depends on when I get confirmation from stakeholders that they want to invest,’ he said.”
So, it’s a bit of a hold-your-horses type deal. At the moment the plan is a proposal (see the full plan at Sydney’s Wonderland) but we asked Mr Khan for the three most exciting aspects of his Wonderland proposal, and here’s what he gave us:
- “Wonderland will be like the Wonderland you remember… just better”: As with before, the proposed Sydney’s Wonderland will have historical themed areas and plenty of nods to your favourite TV shows (whether from the Hanna Barbera stable, we’re yet to see). While it will be “fundamentally reminiscent” of the Wonderland you know and love, it will benefit from the leaps and bounds theme park technology has taken in the last decade.
- We’ll be getting our own Disneyland-style boulevard: The new incarnation of Wonderland would be part of a precinct called the Western Sydney Theme Park precinct that would feature restaurants, parks and tourist attractions aplenty, all centred around a boulevard that will be free to enter.
- Wonderland comes with a water park and wildlife park: … though Kahn is quick to point out that Wonderland has no plans to engage in competition with Wet ‘N Wild, saying “the two facilities will differ substantially in character and theme”.
This combined with news that Wet ‘N Wild is due to open in December has the 12-year-old in us very pumped indeed.
And if you want to relive your old Wonderland Days, check out this Wonderland History website, for pics and information on the old park.
Leonard Cohen 2013 Sydney Tour
The Frontier Touring Company is delighted to confirm the return of critically acclaimed music legend Leonard Cohen to Sydney’s Entertainment Centre for an enigmatic performance on Saturday November 16.
This is part of Cohen’s first set of performances in our city since his 2010 alongside his incredible nine piece band featuring the likes of Sharon Robinson, the infamous Webb Sisters and musical director Roscoe Beck.
An artist who requires no introduction, Cohen is arguably the greatest singer song-writer of modern times. His foundations as a poet can be seen throughout his colourful and emotive song-writing, Cohen has created an anthology of songs that indulge the senses and stay with you long after the music finishes.
Uniquely for such an iconic musician, Cohen’s literary praise rivals that received for his music. In 2011, he was awarded the prestigious Prince of Asturias Award for Literature, which sits alongside his inductions into both America and Canada’s Music Hall Of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.
At his induction into the American Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, he was recognised by Lou Reed as “without question one of the most important and influential songwriters of our time, a figure whose body of work achieves greater mystery and depth as time goes on”.
Revered not only by critics and audiences but also by fellow musicians, Cohen’s songs have been famously covered by a variety of artists, each version a fascinating insight on Cohen’s impact and lasting influence on the music industry.
From Judy Collins’ ‘Suzanne’ to Jeff Buckley’s seminal rendition of ‘Hallelujah’, Cohen’s songs have travelled as far and wide as their author. U2, REM, Sting, Nick Cave, Rufus Wainwright and the late Johnny Cash are among the other famous devotees. It is estimated that his songbook has been covered over 1,330 times by other recording artists.
With a career spanning six decades and sell out shows around the world, the hunger to see this highly influential writer, poet and troubadour remains undiminished.
Since returning to the stage in 2008 after a 15-year hiatus, Cohen has lost nothing in his years off the road and his shows have quickly been recognised as musical history. Recent performances across the United Kingdom confirm that some things get better with age, like fine wine, cheese and Leonard Cohen:
Don’t miss the magnetic and inimitable Leonard Cohen as he returns down under with his emotive, poignant and legendary concerts.

Fall Out Boy 2013 Sydney Concert
The Frontier Touring Company confirms the return of American rockers Fall Out Boy to Sydney this October 25, this time bringing Melbourne’s own British India along for the ride.
No strangers to our shores, Fall Out Boy played the Metro Theatre earlier this year that sold out almost immediately after going on sale. Sydney-siders eager to catch their first glimpse of the band following their three year hiatus from the music scene and, by all accounts, were blown away by the explosive live show:
‘The recently reunited Chicago quartet is as focused as ever when it comes to delivering action-packed sets readymade for impassioned sing-alongs and hectic crowd surges.’ – Nova FM
‘This show was everything the die-hards would’ve wanted and the energy feeding back to the band even from the very back rows at The Metro was incredible.’ – TheMusic.com.au
The Chicago quartet, made up of Patrick Stump on rhythm guitar/vocals, Pete Wentz on bass, Andy Hurley on drums and Joe Trohman on lead guitar, have firmly left their mark on modern music both as artists and pop culture figures since first banding together in 2001.
Four studio albums, tours across the globe, a handful of critical awards, a comic book, a fashion line, a chain of bars and a video game remake later, the band announced in 2009 that they would be going on an indefinite hiatus to pursue other projects.
The time apart definitely lent itself to some phenomenal songwriting with the new album reaching No. 2 on the ARIA Album Charts.
Injecting a home grown flavour into the tour, Melbourne based rock quartet British India will be appearing as Fall Out Boy’s special guests for their entire run of Australian shows.
Currently rocking out at venues nationwide on their Controller tour, British India have become a favourite of many fans and critics with their distinct brand of sharp lyrics, jagged guitars, swelling riffs and infectious hooks.
Do not miss the chance to see Fall Out Boy with special guests British India take the stage across the country this October. Lock the dates in your diaries and settle in for a run of powerful and explosive performances by these two rock powerhouses that may just be the rock shows of the year.
